Instant

Instant is an anachronic type family going from thin, quick handwritten letters to stable, black typographic shapes. Each of the five styles correspond to a singular design related to a specific stroke speed and weight: Vivid, Quick, Regular, Slow, Heavy. Hommage to the poet, painter and writer Henri Michaux (1899 – 1984) it was designed by Jérôme Knebusch in 2005-2012 and questions fundamental differences between handwriting and typography, type family consistency and the relation and usage of roman, bold and cursive faces.

Instant Variable, released in 2020, interpolates all styles fluidly. Intermediate steps between the static instances can be accessed, and fully used. Being build up on stroke weights between 30 and 170 units, this adds in theory 135 supplementary 'moments' to the Instant family.

The different styles can be used independently, as well as together, in different kind of reading situations, from headlines to continious texts. The fonts contain an extended Latin glyph set covering many languages and advanced OpenType features: small capitals, several figure ranges (lining, old style, small caps, tabular and proportional), superiors & inferiors, fractions, case sensitive punctuation for capitals and small capitals, alternates & ligatures.
